The Yorkshire Dales
The Yorkshire Dales are an outstanding area of beauty. Everyday there is something new to see and do, whether it’s walking, cycling or taking a drive. The colours of the hillsides and valleys change daily reflecting so many different colours and light. With stunning views, wonderful waterfalls and rivers it really does take your breath away. A warm welcome awaits you.
At the heart of the Dales, in Wensleydale you will find the small but attractive village of Askrigg. Situated 12 miles west of Leyburn and 5 miles east of Hawes. The village is famous for its association with the fictional vet James Herriot and played the part of Darrowby in the TV series ‘All creature great and small’. Photographs of the cast can still be found hung on the walls of the Kings Arms Hotel. Where as in all the local hostelries a warm welcome and plenty of Yorkshire ales await you.
The Shippon, Askrigg
In the centre of the village stands the parish church of St Oswald’s dating back to 1466. Following the lane that runs to the right of the church you will find our holiday cottage The Shippon. If we leave Askrigg taking the road at the top of the village sign posted Muker (approx 6 miles). We climb the hill out of the village up onto Moor top spying the Grouse perched on top of the heather. This road is one of the most scenic in the Dales. As you descend into Swaldedale, there strecthing before you as far as the eye can see the hillsides are a patchwork of stonewalls and traditional stone barns.
